Gardelin, 2015

On the border of Slovenia and Italy, Alex and Simone farm their 6ha of terraced vines on rolling hills and strata'ed soils of what was formerly a seabed, rich in fossils and sandstone. Their family has been established here for over 100 years, and since taking up biodynamic farming in 2000 they've been able to detect a real change in their wines - a distinct salinity coming to the forefront that was muted before. Unquestionably there's terroir influence here; in terms of macerated wines of this region we can't say we've seen any with as much purity and delicacy elsewhere. To say the 2015 Gardelin is bold is an unjust oversimplification; while there's power and assertiveness to the aromatics and palate structure, the wine remains incredibly poised and light on its feet. A touch of sap and pine underline a long, mineral palate, with crisp lines that define a wonderfully precise wine.
