Here reads one of those idilic wine stories. Fabrizio Iuli’s grandfather planted a small amount of barbera in the fields behind the family restaurant in Piedmonte for home consumption, as a result the house wine was born and so too was Cascina Iuli. Fabrizio took it upon himself years later to commercialise the family wine beyond the restaurant by selling elsewhere and with the proceeds he purchased and planted more vineyards. Even though fully organically certified, these practices were a deeply held tradition within the tiny and somewhat secluded village of Montaldo for as long as Fabrizio’s father can remember. In fact less a tradition and more a natural way of life.

Umberta 2019: Rusticity and energy in equal measure. Limestone dominant soils grant great acidity with a violet driven nose and gentle tannins. Wonderfully unfussy barbera from a family that tends to their 30ha of vines with the utmost care. Wildly good, given it's price, albeit a bit brighter and lighter than most run-of-the-mill barberas. The alcohol finds integration in a gentle fruit and spice character for an overall lifted, deeply drinkable wine.
