Despite being a Marsannay native, Sylvain Pataille had to set out on his own at the ripe age of 14 to pursue a career in winemaking. His trajectory into winemaking was a long one, starting out with a viticulture school in Beaune and into eonology studies in Bordeaux, all eventually leading him back to his home in Marsannay. After several years working in a lab in Beaune, Sylvain acquired just 1 hectare of vines to farm. Out of such humble origins his estate grew to 9ha that he farms to this day. Within his domaine Sylvain farms some deeply legacied sites, including some at the northernmost reaches of the Côte de Nuits that have ebbed in and out of the appellation with changes in the often bureaucratic functioning of Burgundy regulations.
Sylvain's sites sit on predominantly limestone bedrock, just barely covered with an array of marls and clay and red clay dependent on the site. Vines planted by Sylvain have come from selection massale cuttings from Domaine Roulot, and all vines have been farmed biodynamically since 2015. A playful use of oak sets up cuvées for great cellaring potential and an endearing warmth and generosity of character in their youth.
