Born into a winemaking family and spending his adolescence in the vines, Tiago Sampaio knew early on his life’s pursuit would be in the world of wine. As a teenager he began in agronomy school, going on to pursue higher and higher levels of education in the world of agriculture until ultimately getting a PhD in Viticulture and Enology in Oregon, USA. Once completed, he returned to Portugal, in the Cima-Corga region of Alto Duoro, with a renewed sense of drive to see the potential of the vines he grew up amongst. Here he’s taken over some old family vines as well as several new plots of his own, planted on granite and schist and nestled into the cool, sloped hills reaching up to 700 meters above sea level.
Today he’s producing class natural wines that are somehow - unfathomably, really - still remarkably affordable. The vines are all farmed in organics, and in the cellar fermentations are spontaneous and the wines are vinified and bottled with zero to very minimal sulfur additions. We suspect Tiago’s wines won’t stay in the dreamy spot of just before natural wine celebrity status for long, so we welcome you to enjoy a long, hot summer of tasty and affordable Portuguese wines while you can.
