While the history of De Montille dates back to the early 1700s, a more modern history begins in the year 1947, when the legendary Hubert de Montille took over the domaine at the age of 17 after the untimely death of his father. From incredibly humble beginnings Hubert grew the domaine into the world-class and oft-profiled Beaune estate it is today.
In 1995 Hubert's son Etienne began full-time work in the cellar; this is when we see a marked turn in the domaine's history. It's under the direction of Etienne that vineyard work shifted to organic and eventually into the biodynamic farming we know it as today. Over the years and changes of pace, the wines themselves have maintained incredible elegance, due in part to a restrained approach to new oak in the cellar and careful, semi-carbonic fermentations. And while Etienne has moved towards more aromatic styles, the wines have remained ethereal, with wonderful delicacy and detail.
